On moving to the Continent in 1922, Knighton-Hammond initially travelled and stayed in Venice. It was an exciting time for him and he was busy painting and etching in the city. This canal scene is typically Venice with tall buildings flanking the narrow canal linked by the by an arched bridge. A gondolier in the foreground is either about to get into or out of his gondola. Other gondolas are travelling down the canal. With a few lines the artist is able to create a very easily readable composition
