Architectural squares acted as a magnet drawing Knighton-Hammond in with his draughtsmanship and watercolour skills. He had the remarkable ability to illustrate buildings with skilful linear perspective and brilliant rendition of façades and in this case with their stucco finishes and architectural details. The buildings here show Venetian Gothic style influenced by Byzantine and Ottoman empires reflecting Venice’s trading network. This is particularly evident in the Islamic window design in the facing window on the left. The geometry of the picture is immediately evident, based on the verticals, horizontals and perspective lines of the architecture. The lone figure brings a sense of scale to the composition. It is a little unusual to depict such a quiet scene as Knighton-Hammond appeared to favour the hustle and bustle of busy urban streetscapes. Whether quiet or busy, these squares and markets added to Knighton-Hammond’s emerging mastery of the dynamics of urban life in Italy and France. The composition shows a stylistic freedom of touch in the hands of a very competent Impressionist.
