The emblematic power of architecture dominates this watercolour probably in the South of France. The low-lying town with the tall buildings flanking the street with figures going about their business. The use of colour, light and shadow creates luminosity. The Church tower is silhouetted against the sky with the mountains beyond. Knighton-Hammond exploits the special ability for watercolour to convey light and space particularly well in this narrow vista of the street. The clusters of figures give movement and a human touch to create a composition technically skilful and of interest to the viewer. From the style of his signature this picture would date to around 1922.
