The Sussex Farmer was Mr Holman of Ditchling. The portrait was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1938 and had the prestige of being hung ‘on the line’. The portrait exemplifies Knighton-Hammond’s skills with character studies conveying human presence rather than artistic process. The rugged face and strong hands are boldly depicted in thick impasto oil paint. The old characters were to feature in many of Knighton-Hammond’s portraits whilst he lived at Ditchling showing his penetrating powers of observation. A Sussex Farmer was one of two paintings featured on The Antiques Road Show at Southwell Minster on 26th October 2008.
