This narrow canal in Venice is a master class in linear perspective. The tall buildings flanking the canal are superbly drawn depicting the architectural details. The palace on the right and the church beyond are bathed in sunlight whereas the buildings on the left are in shadow indicated by the levels of ink in the etching. The heavier the hatching the more ink is transferred onto the paper giving the darker image. The artist picks out the salient architectural details only on the building in sunlight. There are a number of gondolas on the shaded canal travelling through the reflective water.
