The impressive Forteresse de Polignac presides over the village of Polignac and the Velay plateau on the outskirts of the medieval town of Puy en Velay. Painted en plein air, Knighton-Hammond was a natural painter, skilful, energetic and varied which is everywhere apparent in this watercolour. From the spirited brushstrokes of the buildings, trees and landscape to the majestic fortress silhouetted against the skyline. The artist was well versed in exploiting the special qualities of watercolour to convey light and space.
