Farmer Jeffrey is attending his sheep beside a covered and an open wagon. The composition is built up with a considerable amount of brushwork. Each stroke of the brush, which seems to attack the paper so casually is in fact carefully and masterfully executed. Knighton-Hammond uses form, colour and light to give life to the work of art which is one of the necessary tasks of the true artist. This demonstrated the compositional strength of the painting with man and nature in harmony. Later in life, Knighton-Hammond’s choice of subjects and the ways in which he treated them went through many striking changes to which this picture is testament.
