This portrait in watercolour is of Emmeline Mary (May) Knighton Hammond, the artist’s second wife. They met when the artist was in hospital in San Remo where she was a nurse in 1924. This portrait would have been painted soon after they met. He has portrayed the sitter with great sensitivity and brings out her vulnerability. Fashionable for the 1920s, May has a bob haircut and with big brown eyes she tentatively looks out at the spectator with a hint of shyness.
