This watercolour is full of the techniques learnt from the Impressionists from Knighton-Hammond’s time working on the Continent with his stylistic freedom of touch. The houses and farm buildings have all the architectural features of the Somerset vernacular. We have a master class in linear perspective and a superb rendition of masonry and thatch. The elevated church is bathed in bright sunlight. The foliage is rich in colour and texture. The figures and geese give movement to the composition. He uses motifs to add to the realism of the space with the water trough and the partially open gate. This watercolour was purchased by the present owner direct from the artist’s studio in 1968.
