Knighton-Hammond enjoyed attending horse related events and competitions. On this occasion, near Guildford in 1933, he used his pastels to produce this busy, colourful composition, full of life and activity. The coaches and horses are getting the attention of the gathered crowd and the judges. There is no over blending of the pastels relying on optical mixing of the juxtaposed colours and also the artist is relying on the colour of the paper in the composition. There is a delicacy in the application of the pastel.
