This early oil painting of Middleton Dale dates from 1907. The Autumn scene has a meandering waterfall at its heart. The artist uses the local colour of green for the foliage in the foreground and as the picture recedes into the hills in the background this changes, due to the vail of atmosphere, to blue achieve convincing aerial perspective. Arthur Hammond uses thick impasto paint to give texture and naturalism to his composition.
