This iconic Tudor Manor House dates from the 15th century and is famed for being rather ‘wonky’. This is the result of historic settlement in the foundations due to the marshy ground on which it sits. The building is of timber framed construction with a heavy gritstone slab roof covering. Knighton-Hammond shows us the construction features and chose to depict the south porch and Porter’s Lodge in this etching. The adjacent bridge over the moat has a lone figure looking over the parapet giving a sense of scale as do the ducks at the water’s edge. This etching is beautifully crafted with skill and sure knowledge of what the etching plate was going to produce when the print run was made. The detailing of the architectural features demonstrates Knighton-Hammond’s virtuosity of his draughtsmanship early in his career.
