North End Farm is bathed in sunlight and shadow and the artist exploits the special ability of watercolour to convey light and space. The figures give a sense of scale and movement to the composition. The three-dimensional pictorial space is created by the diminishing scale of the line of fence posts. In the Impressionist manner the shadows are not just an absence of light, but light of a different quality and value.
