The 14th century Church of St Roch, Pendomer in Somerset was painted by Knighton-Hammond in 1951. The main focus of the church is the east gable end with its arched window and ham stone dressings. The architecture of the church and the adjacent thatched cottage is painted with a stylistic freedom of touch in watercolour. The churchyard is depicted in fluid colour washes. The tree foliage adds a further touch of colour. The artist uses light to good effect with the gable end of the church in shadow contrasting with the cottage bathed in sunlight. The whole composition would have been executed at speed as was Knighton-Hammond’s way.
