Knighton-Hammond would have taken great interest in the art and culture of Florence. This watercolour of the Piazza della Signoria includes the iconic statutes on the right starting with Hercules and Cacus by Baccio Bandinelli, David by Michelangelo and the Fountain of Neptune by Bartolomeo Ammannati all outside the Palazzo Vecchio. To the left is the Loggia dei Lanzi. The architecture of the piazza is depicted in a free yet accurate manner. The figures are busy going about their business creating movement, scale and interest for the spectator.
