This watercolour of a harbour is probably Concarneau in France. The busy scene has a sailing boat front and centre with figures in a rowing boat alongside. The masts of the sailing boat are built up with a profusion of constructive brushstrokes creating a fierce expression of energy. The figures in the boats and on the harbour wall, give a sense of scale and movement. The work is delightfully free and sketchy but so sure in drawing and has the right use of colour. The reflections of the boats in the water have great fluidity. The view has a sense of engagement with this composition.
