Sailing Boats in Port in America

Location: America

Subject: Coastal Scene

Date: 1920

Signature: A Knighton Hammond

Dimensions: 34 cm x 24 cm

This harbour scene would have been painted when Knighton-Hammond was returning from a 6-month commission for the Dow Chemical Company in Midland, Michigan, USA in 1920. Sailing boats are moored up against the harbour wall. The somewhat bleak scene beyond the harbour includes commercial buildings serviced by the cargo boats. The sails giving a lighter colour to the composition. The artist creates a sense of movement in the reflections painted in thick impasto paint in the choppy water. This oil painting was purchased by the present owner direct from the artist’s studio in 1968.
