This watercolour would have been painted soon after Knighton-Hammond arrived in Venice in 1922. A view of San Giorgio Maggiore across the Guidecca. The church was designed by Andrea Palladio and stands majestic in this most iconic city. The artist has rapidly painted the church, gondolas and their reflections in the water with a newfound freedom reminiscent of the Impressionists. He captures the light of Venice and the heat haze giving San Giorgio an atmospheric appearance.
