San Giorgio Maggiore, Venice is perhaps the most famous church in the city. Designed by the famous architect Andrea Palladio – the most imitated architect of all time. When Knighton-Hammond was painting this view, it was a dull day and this is reflected in the subdued colours and tones. There is a vaporous atmosphere creating a haze. The artist chose a side-on view of the church. The architecture is well defined. The sailing boat in the foreground gives movement to the composition.
