This self-portrait of the artist shows acute observation probably looking in a mirror. The focus is on the eyes looking out at the spectator. The light source is from the sitters left and the pastels have modelled the head to reflect this. The artist’s spectacles are particularly well depicted. The collar and tie have been detailed whereas the jacket is minimal and fades out. The background is limited to an area which helps in defining the outline of the head. Knighton-Hammond was to carry out many more self-portraits in later life.
