The Ditchling Postman was Joseph Faulkner. Here depicted in his uniform and was probably at the end of his round when Knighton-Hammond invited him into the studio to sit for his portrait. This was not unusual as Knighton-Hammond enjoyed painting the characters of the town. Joe looks very much at ease and portrays his character communicated by his eyes. One can imagine sitter and artists were great friends and Joe would have been a regular visitor to the house if not the studio - although this is one of at least two portraits of Joe. The complexion of the sitter is created using the impasto technique.
