This watercolour would have been undertaken soon after Knighton-Hammond moved to the Continent in 1922. He was drawn to architectural squares and French pleinairism and Impressionism. The artist had an instinctive feeling for light, colour and tone which enabled him to produce works of luminosity and clarity as can be observed in this watercolour. The buildings surrounding the market square are depicted with a stylistic freedom of touch without slavishly representing detail. The quickly applied brush stokes of the figures give a painterly illusion of movement and spontaneity.
