This harbour scene would have been painted when Knighton-Hammond was returning from a 6-month commission for the Dow Chemical Company in Midland, Michigan, USA in 1920. The stream powered tug boat is moored in harbour. The industrial cranes are present to unload cargo. There is an interesting mix of buildings and structures beyond the harbour. The smoke from the funnels gives a sense of movement to the composition. In conjunction with the variety of brushstroke and texture of paint, Knighton-Hammond adopts a greater intensity in his colours. The absence of human presence does not detract from the everyday collective activity as it still powerfully engages the spectator’s interest. This oil painting was purchased by the present owner direct from the artist’s studio in 1968.
